Camilla Parker Bowles To Officially Be 'Queen,' Not Just 'Queen Consort'

The title of Camilla Parker Bowles, Queen Consort of King Charles, is set to change following his coronation in May, according to a report.

Camilla Parker-Bowles has been married to King Charles since 2005 and had the title of Duchess of Cornwall until Queen Elizabeth II's death in September of last year. She chose not to use the title of "Princess of Wales," which Princess Diana, the King's first wife, had.

Should Camilla be Given The Title of Queen?

The title was initially known as "Princess Consort." However, Queen Elizabeth II expressed her "sincere desire" that the Duchess of Cornwall be called "Queen Consort" when her son Charles becomes King.

Noting that the British monarchy can only be inherited, those who marry into the royal line are ineligible to ascend to the throne. On May 6, King Charles and Camilla will be jointly crowned at the coronation ceremony, NDTV reported.

The website of the Royal Family reads, "Unless decided otherwise, a Queen consort is crowned with the King in a similar but simpler ceremony. If the new Sovereign is a Queen, her consort is not crowned or anointed at the coronation ceremony."

According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen Consort's main job is to provide emotional and practical assistance to the Monarch. The consort must have a formal role within the government system, read official documents, or attend to official audiences.

According to reports, Buckingham Palace officials look to the past for reference, specifically the titles used for the King's grandfather's wife. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the wife of King George VI, was Queen Consort but became Queen Elizabeth after her husband was crowned and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother following his death.

When Charles and Camilla became engaged in February 2005, Buckingham Palace issued the following statement: "It is anticipated that Mrs. Parker-Bowles would use the title HRH The Princess Consort upon the accession of The Prince of Wales to the throne."

About eight years after losing his first wife, Diana, Princess of Wales, the King wed Camilla. Charles and Diana were married for fifteen years, from 1981 to 1996, and they are the parents of Princes William and Harry, as per The Independent.

The change occurred after the late Queen released a message on the 70th anniversary of her ascension to the throne in June last year. The coronation will be commemorated by a series of events over a bank holiday weekend. The holiday will occur on Monday, May 8.

Camilla Parker Bowles Hints About Her Royal Title

After the service at Westminster Abbey, the King, and Queen Consort will return to the palace with other members of the royal family in the "coronation procession." They will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony. It has yet to be determined which royals will be present.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will reportedly get an invitation to the coronation, but it is unknown if they will accept. Before contemplating attending the event, Harry reportedly needs an apology from the King and his brother, the Prince of Wales.

This week, a clue was given that suggested this upcoming shift is likely to occur. Camilla held a gathering at Clarence House on Thursday to honor her Reading Room project. She said during the reception that the project, which began on Instagram, will become a charity named The Queen's Reading Room, with the term Consort eliminated.

And a source told the Mail On Sunday, "There is a belief at the Palace that Queen Consort is cumbersome, and it may be preferable for Camilla to be recognized simply as the Queen at the appropriate moment. The Reading Room served as evidence of this. Her Majesty is, after all, the Queen."

It has been said that referring to Camilla as the Queen indicates a shift in the nation's fondness for her. Many feel that the late Queen's intervention last year, in which she demanded that her daughter-in-law be referred to as "Queen Consort," was an enormous show of solidarity.
