BLACKPINK, the first K-pop act to headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, has warmed up the stage at North America's largest music festival.
The quintet appeared at the event's closing performance on Saturday in Indio, California, performing various hit songs such as 'Boombayah,' 'Playing With Fire,' 'Lovesick Girls,' 'Kill This Love,' and 'Pink Venom' to the accompaniment of a band.
BLACKPINK Performs at Coachella Festival
BLACKPINK was the first K-pop girl group to play at Coachella in 2019, although they did it on a sub-main stage. It did, however, return after four years as one of the main stage's headliners, a position matching its status as the world's biggest female group.
During the performance, all four members performed solo songs. Jennie played 'You and Me,' her unreleased second track after 'Solo,' while Jisoo performed her recently released first solo single 'Flower.' According to Korea Times, Lisa treated fans to a pole dance performance of 'Money,' while Rose warmed up the crowd with 'Gone' and 'On the Ground' from her solo CD 'R.'
"Four years ago, we were invited to perform here for you at Coachella in the Sahara tent, and that made a mark in all of our hearts," Rose addressed the audience. "I must say, this is like a dream come true."
"We are so happy to be back here," Jennie remarked. It's incredible that we made it from the Sahara to the main stage in four years."
The packed house liked the concert, singing along to even the Korean-language songs. Pink cheering wands were waved by fans, with a giant Taegukgi (Korean national flag) visible in one of the seats closer to the stage.
The event was also aired online via the festival's YouTube page, and its live chat box was flooded with positive opinions. The band is now on the greatest world tour for a K-pop girl group, with 1.5 million fans expected in North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
It will also be the first K-pop artist to headline the British Summer Time Hyde Park event, one of the major British music festivals, which will take place in July in London. BLACKPINK is YouTube's most-subscribed act, with over 82 million followers, and has won two MTV Video Music Awards.
BLACKPINK World Tour
They have released two studio albums throughout their six-year history. The Album, their debut release, was published in 2020 and peaked at number two on the UK album charts. Born Pink, their follow-up album, was released in 2022 and topped the UK charts.
The group is on the road for their 2022/2023 Born Pink tour. It has added four stadium shows to its list of upcoming North American tour dates: MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (August 12), Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (August 18), Oracle Park in San Francisco (August 22), and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles (August 26).
According to Billboard, BLACKPINK revealed extra North American dates on their Instagram Story on Sunday with a pink banner and a link to where fans may register for ticket presale access.
The tour began last year and has already resulted in sold-out shows in South Korea, North America, and Europe. The quintet will play two gigs at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on June 10 and 11 and two more at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena on June 16 and 17.
Because of their ties to Australia and New Zealand, BLACKPINK is one of the most popular K-pop groups in Australia and New Zealand. Per Daily Mail, other foreign performers were Bad Bunny from Puerto Rico, Icelandic superstar Bjork, Rosalia from Spain, Burna Boy from Nigeria, and British-Indian vocalist Jai Paul.
This year's Coachella lineup included Metro Boomin, Pusha T, Kid Laroi, $uicideboy, A Boogie, Latto, Earthgang, Flo Milli, GloRilla, 070 Shake, and Rae Sremmurd. The headliners from last year were Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, and the Swedish House Mafia. Doja Cat, Lil Baby, Phoebe Bridgers, Megan Thee Stallion, and 21 Savage also appeared.
