TikTok Influencer Brooke Lim Posts Apology Video Over Essay Plagiarism Issue

According to The Straits Times, the 19-year-old tutor, Brooke Lim, goes by the TikTok username @sugaresque, wherein she flaunts a whopping 183,000 followers. Besides her stint on the social network, she is a General Paper tutor, running a tuition agency, Classicle Club.

The influencer figured in hot water recently. An account on TikTok, known as @sugaresqueessay, made a controversial revelation alleging that her blog essay was mostly plagiarized.

She told The Straits Times, "I take full responsibility for my recent mistake of plagiarizing a segment in a personal blog post written in a personal capacity." Above and beyond that, Lim also asked for the forgiveness of the authors of the books that she had plagiarized from.

"I have since taken down the essay," the Singaporean TikTok influencer confirms.

On top of that, the TikTok influencer assured that the essay she published was "not for profit, academic assignment, or publication." She also shared an apology video on the platform while she refuted some plagiarism claims.

Brooke Lim's Blog Essay Plagiarism Issue Goes Viral on TikTok

The expose of the plagiarism in her published blog essay started with an anonymous TikTok account.

A viral TikTok video shared a screenshot of a Google document, which details alleged plagiarism on the eating disorder essay of Lim. She published it on her online blog, Grayscale Copy, with the title "On Being Afraid Of Eating."

The video says that roughly 70% of the published blog essay "is not her original work." It turns out that the people behind the viral video have eating disorders. So they have previously read books that talk about it. Hence, they quickly noticed that they were familiar with the text in the essay of the TikTok influencer since they read it elsewhere.

Babelfish Singapore reports that the publisher of the viral video noticed that her "personal experience" strikingly resembles the content of other published books under different authors. They reportedly reached out to Lim regarding their concerns. But instead of responding to them, the accusers note that the TikTok influencers edited her essay to ditch the lines that were allegedly plagiarized.

Rice Media notes that TikTok videos of Lim usually feature her daily life. She is also known for sharing videos of studying tips for students who want to ace their exams.
