HTC might give mobile carriers a sneak peak of their smartwatch prototype at the the Mobile World Congress trade show next week, Bloomberg reports.
Carriers will get to preview three wearable tech devices the company is planning to unveil. However, HTC has no plan on revealing wearable tech devices to the public.
"HTC also is developing a watch using Google Inc. (GOOG)'s Now service and an electronic bracelet that plays music, though it may not demonstrate them," a source told Bloomberg.
Chairman Cher Wang recently spoke to Bloomberg about HTC jumping on the wearable tech bandwagon.
"Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believe that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems," Wang said. "These are customer-centric problems."
According to Bloomberg's source, "HTC's first smartwatch will feature Qualcomm's Mirasol display technology, Bluetooth connectivity and a music player, the person familiar said. The second watch, based on Google's Now set of applications, will likely feature an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AMOLED, screen."
The smartwatch will also have a thinner display and will allow users to play music.
"HTC has yet to decide if any of the devices will go into final production," the insider said.
HTC saw a drop in sales by 30 percent last year, according to Bloomberg. The company hopes releasing the wearable tech will bring in more revenue.
"2013 wasn't a very good year for HTC," Chang said. "We have to admit we took our eyes somewhat off the ball in making sure we have a robust portfolio in the mid- and affordable end, which we're fixing now."
HTC's wearable tech devices are slated to hit store shelves during the holiday shopping season of 2014. The company have not confirmed which tech devices will be available.
