Special counsel Jack Smith's office is seeking former United States President Donald Trump's international business records since 2017 as part of a subpoena to the Republican's company.

Federal prosecutors overseeing Trump's handling of classified documents have also issued a subpoena that seeks information about the former president's business dealings in foreign countries since he first became the nation's leader.

Trump Foreign Deals

Despite the subpoena, it remains to be seen what the prosecutors are looking for in sending it to the former president's company, the Trump Organization, or when it was issued. However, the development suggests that investigators are now broadening the case.

The case previously involved investigators trying to determine whether or not the former president broke the law for taking sensitive government documents with him when he left the White House and did not fully comply with orders to return the materials, as per the New York Times.

Smith's office was the one that drafted the subpoena that seeks details on the Trump Organization's real estate licensing and development dealings. It encompasses Trump's foreign deals in seven countries, China, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman.

The former president's company swore off foreign deals while the Republican was in the White House. The only deal that Trump is publicly known to have made was with a Saudi-based real estate company. The deal was to license the company's name to a housing, hotel, and golf complex set to be built in Oman.

The move made by Smith's prosecutors was made to gain insight into Trump's foreign deals as part of a previous subpoena that was sent to Trump's company. It sought the former president's dealings with a Saudi0backed golf venture known as LIV Golf that holds tournaments at some of the Republican's golf clubs.

Business Records

According to the Washington Post, the investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents came as the materials were believed to have sensitive information about U.S. intelligence-gathering aimed at China and other subjects.

The development comes after Smith was appointed special counsel in November by Attorney General Merrick Garland. He became responsible for overseeing more than 100 documents that the FBI recovered in a raid of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The situation also comes as Trump was found to have profited up to $160 million from international business dealings during his time as president of the United States.

Throughout the Republican's time in office, he, his family, and his GOP allies reassured the public on multiple occasions that there would be no conflict of interest resulting from his refusal to divest his businesses.

This comes as Trump previously promised Americans that he would donate his salary, which was something that the former president never did. Despite this, he continued to siphon millions of dollars from taxpayers' money to offset his presidential costs, said the Crew.
