'Rick and Morty' is recasting Justin Roiland, who voiced the titular duo, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, for the upcoming season 7.
An Adult Swim executive confirms that they are replacing Roiland and are looking for a new voice actor to grace the phenomenal animated show.
'Rick and Morty' to Recast Justin Roiland for Season 7
Adult Swim has confirmed that the highly acclaimed animated series 'Rick and Morty' is about to undergo a major transformation.
According to Mashable, the animated show announced Roiland's departure last January 24 after facing domestic violence charges. The cast and crew of the phenomenal series also called him out for his abusive and inappropriate behavior.
However, the domestic violence charges against that voice actor have since been dropped. With that in mind, some viewers wonder if Adult Swim still has plans to bring him back.
Cartoon Network President Michael Ouweleen and the 'Rick and Morty' executive producer Steve Levy have finally spoken up about the much-awaited upcoming season of the show.
Ouweleen confirmed during the Annecy International Festival in France that they are officially looking for a replacement for Roiland. The Cartoon Network boss says, "He will be replaced in dubbing."
He further explained that the replacement of Roiland would no longer imitate his iconic voice. Ouweleen explains, "In any case, the idea is that we feel that they are the same characters."
Mashable notes that it is the first instance that a show, which includes Roiland, confirmed that he would be replaced.
Meanwhile, as Gizmodo reports, the 'Rick and Morty' executive producer assured fans of the series that "the writing quality has never been better," stressing that he does not believe that "anyone will bat an eyelid hearing the new voices." Levy goes on to confirm that they are still in search of a replacement. So it remains to be seen who is taking over.
What Happened to Justin Roiland?
Roiland voices the titular duo of the show, Sanchez and Smith, alongside other characters in the series.
However, as per Gizmodo, the authorities arrested the 'Rick and Morty' voice actor in Orange County in California last January over a domestic assault charge from 2020. The district attorney dropped the cases against him in late March due to "insufficient evidence."
Due to the domestic violence charges, Adult Swim, the distributor of 'Rick and Morty' "ended its association" with the voice actor.
Besides that, Hulu also dropped his roles in 'Solar Opposites' and 'Koala Man.' But these shows confirmed that they are moving forward without him.
