The US rock band Foo Fighters made a surprise performance at Glastonbury 2023 after months of speculation about the identity of the mystery act called "The ChurnUps."
Organizers of the festival have teased attendees of the band playing at its famous Pyramid Stage shortly before the Arctic Monkeys on Friday's lineup (June 23).
"You guys knew it was us the whole time, didn't you?" teased Grohl. "It's nice to see your faces again."
The speculation began when Glastonbury's organizers announced The ChurnUps would be featured in a prominent slot despite not having any online profile or even songs. Fans quickly suggested it would be Foo Fighters, the band fronted by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.
Despite the band's desperate cover-up by creating a Twitter account, one of the tweets was signed DG, Grohl's initials.
Remembering Taylor Hawkins
The crowd erupted in cheers as the ChurnUps logo was replaced by that of the Foo Fighters before Grohl and the rest of the band appeared. Josh Freese, the band's new drummer after the death of Taylor Hawkins, was also in attendance.
They played an emotional version of their song "Everlong," dedicated to Hawkins. "Let's sing this one loud and sing for Mr. Taylor," Grohl addressed the crowd. He added that Hawkins's last performance in Glastonbury was in 2017.
The band's Friday performance was part of the third of a six-day Glastonbury Festival from June 21 to 26. Aside from the Foo Fighters and the Arctic Monkeys, several famous acts that are performed today, included Carly Rae Jepsen.
Guns N' Roses, Lizzo, Lana Del Rey, Loyle Carner, Blondie, and Elton John would also be performing over the weekend.
