Days after Google Pixel Fold's release, the new foldable phone is already facing reports of janky folding displays.
Several users have taken to social media and online forums to complain about screen damage.
Google Pixel Fold Users Report Broken Displays
In a world where technology constantly pushes the boundaries of innovation, foldable phones have emerged as the latest trend. The newest kid on the block is the Google Pixel Fold, which started shipping on June 27. It seeks to rival the leading contender, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.
However, as per Android Central, numerous Pixel Fold users are promptly reporting cases of damaged folding screens. The issue seems to arise when the device is repeatedly folded and unfolded, which is precisely what a foldable smartphone is designed for.
One user, Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica, reported that his Pixel Fold's screen malfunctioned after merely four days of use. He believes a small piece of debris may have gotten into the phone's hinge and damaged the display.
Besides Ars Technica's writer, other users have reported similar issues. One user on Reddit says that their Pixel Fold's screen developed a bright pink line after being folded a few times. Another Redditor reveals that the screen protector on the foldable display has begun peeling already. The common issue among users is the small dents visible on the OLED.
Is There a Durability Issue?
To be fair, it is still too damn early to rule out whether the Pixel Fold has a widespread durability issue. However, the early reports are certainly concerning.
It is worth noting that Foldable phones are already known to be more fragile than traditional smartphones. To be precise, the highly popular Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip still receive various reports of broken displays, including screen cracks and wonky hinges.
The Verge asked the search giant about the broken screens. However, the phone maker failed to address the janky display complaints.
Instead, The spokesperson of Google, Alex Moriconi, only urged Pixel Fold owners to report the broken displays to their support team. He says, "We recommend anyone having an issue reach out to support to investigate."
On top of that, The Verge notes that the tech juggernaut announced its plans to offer iFixit's DIY screen repair kit soon. Given that, the phone just recently started shipping to its first customers. The do-it-yourself kit for its $2,000 foldable has yet to hit the stores.
