According to Independent UK's latest report, the X branding is already owned by some tech companies.

These include Microsoft and Meta; both of them have intellectual property rights for the letter X.
"There's a 100 percent chance that Twitter is going to get sued over this by somebody," explained U.S. trademark lawyer Josh Gerben.

He added that X branding is already covered by almost 900 U.S. trademark registrations.
Here are some of the companies that filed a U.S. trademark registration for the letter X:

  • Meta: has a federal trademark for the blue-and-white letter X for its social networking services in gaming, entertainment, and app development.
  • Microsoft: has a registered U.S. trademark for the X branding, which it uses for the Xbox video game console.

As of writing, Microsoft and Meta haven't commented about the rebranding of Twitter to use the letter X.

A potential lawsuit from Meta, Microsoft, and other companies that have trademark registrations for the letter X is not the only problem that Elon Musk faces.

There's also a chance that some countries block Twitter because of its name since it X.com now redirects to the platform.

The South China Morning Post reported that Indonesia already blocked the social media site.
This is because X.com was once linked to gambling and porn in the country.

Since Indonesia has strict rules that aim to reduce online pornography and gambling, millions of Indonesians are now unable to access Elon Musk's platform.

Other countries with strict anti-pornography and anti-gambling regulations could soon follow. These include China, North Korea, etc.
