A single ticket sold at a Publix grocery store in Neptune Beach, Florida won the Mega Millions jackpot worth $1.58 billion, ending the lottery's four-month scratch streak.
The winning numbers drawn Tuesday night (August 8) were: 13, 19, 20, 32, 33, and yellow ball 14.
Both Publix and Florida Lottery were asked by reporters for comment but have not immediately responded as of this report.
Four-Month Scratch Streak
Before the big win, there had been 31 straight draws since the last time someone won the game's jackpot on April 18, enabling the prize to gradually grow to become the third-largest ever in US history.
A $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot in November 2022 currently ranked as the highest lottery prize on record as of this report.
Mega Millions jackpot winners are very rare, due to a one-in-302.6-million odds of winning the pot money.
Two Options to Get Prize Money
The winner would have the option to have the $1.58 billion paid out in full for an annuity of over 30 years. But normally, winners prefer the lump sum option, with Tuesday's jackpot having an estimated $783.3 million value after tax.
Lottery prize money is subject to federal taxes, with some states also taking their cut before handing the prize money over to the winner.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, Washington DC, and the US Virgin Islands.
