"Girls" star Adam Driver is close to signing on for a villain role in "Star Wars Episode 7," The Wrap reports. The 30-year-old actor has been linked to the film in the past but reportedly a scheduling conflict prevented an official deal from being closed.
Now, sources claim that scheduling is no longer an issue. Details of the specific character he's going to play is being kept under wraps but a source told The Hollywood Reporter that it will be "in the vein of iconic 'Star Wars' villain Darth Vader."
"Driver's name had been rumored during the casting process, but in recent weeks, the Indiana native has become Disney and LucasFilms' top choice to play the main villain," THR writes.
The source also said that the role Driver is connected to might also be the same one that Michael Fassbender previously met with JJ Abrams about last year and for which Joel Kinnaman tested for.
Reportedly an official announcement about Driver's character will be announced in a few days, sources told Variety. It's expected that Carrie Fisher, Mark Hammill and Harrison Ford will also return.
The actor has been linked to other movie roles recently including the upcoming Zack Snyder flick "Batman Vs. Superman." Sources told The Wrap, that Driver turned the offer down because he knew he "stood a strong chance for a lead role in 'Star Wars.'"
He also reportedly turned down a role in the Green Hat Film's production "Arms and the Dudes" for the same reason.
Despite the story only being a rumor for the time being, the actor is already receiving congratulations from his "Girls" co-star Lena Dunham.
"We're VERY proud of Adam Driver re: Star Wars. He's about to rip a hole in da force. Is that a thing? I guess I should see those movies?" she tweeted followed by:
"I confirm nothing bc I know nothing bc I'm on a plane with my dad! I just like Adam more than almost anyone, and JJ Abrams a whole lot too."
"Star Wars Episode 7" will start shooting in London this spring and is expected to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.
