People magazine has selected Patrick Dempsey as the sexiest man alive for the year 2023.
During the episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that aired on Tuesday night, November 7, it was announced that the actor who appeared in Ferrari and who was previously on Grey's Anatomy will be receiving this year's recognition, as reported by Variety.
This Year's Sexiest Man Alive
On the late-night talk show, just before they revealed that Dempsey was the sexiest man alive, the actor took part in a question-and-answer session with the audience while wearing a realistic lizard face filter, then switched to a donkey filter to reveal his true identity.
"I'm glad it's happening at this point in my life," Dempsey told People magazine in the story that named him as this year's recipient of the award. "It's nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive."
When asked how he first reacted to the news, Dempsey responded with a chuckle, adding that he was utterly stunned, and then he began laughing, thinking it was only a joke.
Dempsey is among the many eligible men included in the magazine's 2023 sexiest man alive edition, which was previously teased to include names like Pedro Pascal, Timothée Chalamet, Usher, Jamie Foxx, Lenny Kravitz, and Philadelphia Eagles star center Jason Kelce.
People magazine has made the selection of the sexiest man alive an annual event ever since the award was first presented in 1985. The first recipient of the distinction was Mel Gibson, who was just 29 years old at the time. Chris Evans was given the award the year before, while other recent recipients include Michael B. Jordan, Paul Rudd, John Legend, and Idris Elba.
Dempsey as Actor and Racer
With Dempsey's role as Dr. Derek Shepherd--aka "McDreamy--on Grey's Anatomy, in which he appeared in more than 250 episodes, he became a major Hollywood star.
Later this year, he will be seen in Michael Mann's upcoming film Ferrari as an Italian racing car racer, Piero Taruffi. Actors who are currently on strike have been granted an exemption in order to promote the movie.
He reportedly performed all the driving himself, according to the AP News. The Wright Motorsports website boasts that Dempsey has raced in many professional events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
While he is most known for his racing and acting careers, he also established the Dempsey Center in Maine to remember his late mother and give assistance to people with cancer.
The edition of People's Sexiest Man Alive, in which an interview with Dempsey appears, will hit newsstands this coming Friday, November 10.
