Philippine President Bongbong Marcos faces criticisms after he used the presidential helicopter just to attend the Coldplay concert at the Philippine Arena.
Photos of the helicopter he used quickly spread on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. Filipinos shared their mixed reactions regarding what Bongbong Marcos did.
Some of his supporters, especially his "fanatics," defended the Filipino leader; saying that it is acceptable to ensure his safety. Meanwhile, others gave a more reasonable argument, saying that he shouldn't use a helicopter since the fuel and other expenses would be coming from people's taxes.
However, PSG released an explanation to defend Bongbong's use of the presidential helicopter, which many Filipinos do not accept.
PSG Explains Why Bongbong Marcos Uses Presidential Helicopter
Via its official Facebook post, the Presidential Communications Office explained that Bongbong Marcos had to use the presidential helicopter because of unforeseen traffic complications along the route going to the concert's venue.
"Yesterday, the Philippine Arena experienced an unprecedented influx of 40,000 individuals eagerly attending a concert, resulting in unforeseen traffic complications along the route," said PSG.
"Recognizing that this traffic situation posed a potential threat to the security of our President, the PSG took decisive action by opting for the presidential chopper," it added.
PSG further stated that aside from ensuring the safety of the Philippine president, their decision to use a helicopter "exemplified" their commitment to prioritize security during unexpected challenges.
Based on the comment section, it is clear that Filipino netizens are not having PSG's explanation. One of them sarcastically said that it was a great decision to use public funds for Bongbong's personal leisure while citizens are struggling to survive each day.
Others ridiculed the Filipino leader, saying that Bongbong Marcos is quite active when it comes to having a "good time," but is always missing during natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other serious happenings.
Was Bongbong Marcos' Use of Helicopter Acceptable?
Whether you accept it or not, what Bongbong Marcos did as a Filipino leader wasn't acceptable for any reason. Remember, although he's the president, he is still considered a government "employee," who should serve Filipinos while he's in Malacanang Palace.
If you read the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees (Republic Act No. 6713), then you will know why using the presidential helicopter for personal gain is unethical.
This law states that ALL public officials and employees, including the president, should be accountable to people at all times. They also need to discharge their duties with "utmost responsibility, integrity, competence, and loyalty, act with patriotism and justice, lead modest lives, and uphold public interest over personal interest."
This means that public officials are expected not to use people's taxes or public resources for personal gains or non-official purposes, such as going to a concert of Coldplay.
