NBA veteran Michael Jordan's championship Air Jordan sneakers were sold for a whopping $8 million, as confirmed by Sotheby's; one of the largest brokers of collectibles in the world.
The New York-based British-founded auction said that the basketball shoes, which were worn by MJ during his six NBA finals championship games, are now the most expensive game-worn sneakers. If you are among the fans of Michael Jordan, here's everything you need to know about his expensive "Dynasty Collection."
The six Air Jordans that Sotheby's sold on Friday, Feb. 2, were worn by Michael Jordan during his NBA finals games in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998.
"Serving as both a reminder of Michael Jordan's lasting impact on the world and a tangible expression of his recognized legendary status, its significance is further validated by this monumental result," said Sotheby's Vice President Brahm Wachter via NBC News.
Sotheby's didn't provide the name of the buyer. But, the auction firm said that the buyer is a private American collector, who was able to purchase Michael Jordan's Dynasty Collection from a long-time Bulls executive.
For those who didn't know, the NBA superstar gave an NBA championship sneaker to this executive in 1991. After that, this became the tradition of MJ in the following years.
Aside from becoming the most expensive game-worn sneaker collection, Forbes reported that Michael Jordan's Dynasty Collection also became the second-most expensive Jordan memorabilia in history.
This means that the NBA Finals Game 1 jersey of Michael Jordan in 1998, which was sold at Sotheby's auction in 2022 for over $10 million, is still the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia.
"Today's record-breaking price is a testament to the GOAT," said Wachter after the Dynasty Collection was officially sold.
Sotheby's disclosed the exact Air Jordan sneaker models that are included in the Dynasty Collection. These include the following:
- Air Jordan VI (1991)
- Air Jordan VII (1992)
- Air Jordan VIII (1993)
- Air Jordan XI (1996)
- Air Jordan XII (1997)
- Air Jordan XIV (1998)
Aside from these basketball shoes, the Dynasty Collection also includes some limited photographs of MJ, which were signed by the NBA legend himself.
These images show Jordan celebrating his four victorious finals in 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1998. They were taken by Bill Smith, a well-known NBA photographer during the time of MJ.
