At least two people are dead in a Pittsburgh suburb after a home hooked up to a private natural gas well exploded on Tuesday morning, cascading debris all over the surrounding neighborhood.
"We all felt and heard the explosion," Allegheny County Division Fire Chief Andrew Tomer said during a press conference. "You could feel it in your chest."
Neighbors of the Crescent Township home told reporters that they could feel tremors from miles away, while smoke filled the air. The identities of the victims have not yet been made public but some neighbors say that two people lived inside the home, according to WTAE.
"We did see a lady come out of her house with the windows were all blown out, and she was holding a baby," John Bundy, an employee at a nearby factory, told ABC News.
"She said her parents lived [inside the home.] And we went to her right away because obviously, you know, she needed consoling. And, it was just a bad scene."
Budy added that he initially thought that the noise and smoke were generated by a factory explosion. "We saw, like, a mushroom cloud explosion," he said.
Allegheny County officials posted on social media advising people to stay away from the area so that first responders could address the "still active" incident. No injuries have been reported yet, according to Tomer.
Last August, six people were killed in Allegheny County when a Plum Borough home exploded.
