A man suspected in the fatal shooting of a police officer and named as a person of interest in a paramedic's death was apprehended Sunday in New Mexico, as a sweeping manhunt ended with another alleged altercation with law enforcement, the New Mexico State Police said.
Jaremy Smith was arrested following "a pursuit and officer-involved shooting," days after State Police officer Justin Hare was shot and killed on Interstate 40. Police believe that Smith, 33, gunned down Hare when the officer stopped to help Smith with car troubles.
Smith then allegedly fled in the car, a white BMW belonging to Phonesia Machado-Fore, a paramedic who was found dead Friday in South Carolina. Smith is considered a person of interest in Machado-Fore's death, according to the New Mexico State Police.
Following Hare's death, Smith became the subject of a large-scale manhunt with New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler directly addressing the suspect during a press conference.
"Jaremy Smith, we are coming for you," he said Saturday.
Smith was spotted driving in Albuquerque around 8 a.m. Sunday. He allegedly tried to flee Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies, sparking a pursuit that included "a deputy-involved shooting," the agency said. Further details on the shooting were not immediately released, but no deputies were injured, officials said.
The deputies eventually caught up to Smith and took him into custody.
Smith was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and criminal damage to property.
