Trader Joe's Cashews Linked to Salmonella Are Recalled In 16 States

Customers are advised to return 50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews

Popular grocery store chain Trader Joe's has recalled bagged cashews in more than a dozen states due to concerns about salmonella contamination.

California-based Wenders LLC is recalling certain lots of the nuts sold as "50% Less Sodium Roasted & Salted Whole Cashews" by Trader Joe's. Customers who purhcased that item are advised to return the product to the store they were purchased from.

The impacted nuts were distributed at stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

Salmonella is a potentially deadly bacterium, according to the FDA.

Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and headache. While most healthy people recover from salmonella infection without treatment, it can be potentially fatal for young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration discovered the contamination during "routine testing." There have been no reported cases of illness linked to the cashews, according to the government agency.
