US Congress Has $1.2 Trillion Spending Deal, Needs to Vote as Friday Deadline Looms

The money will fund several key government agencies

Congressional leaders from both parties looked are trying to get their members to pass a $1.2 trillion spending package before current funding expires at midnight Friday.

The money would fund several key government agencies.

An official wording of the legislation was revealed Thursday.

The spending package includes defense, homeland security, financial services and general government, labor-HHS, the legislative branch, and state-foreign operations.

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said the bill includes $1 billion for child care and the Head Start program.

The legislation also provides money aimed at combating the flow of fentanyl and strengthens detection and enforcement capabilities at the border.

It also authorizes an additional 12,000 Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) for Afghans who assisted the U.S. government during the war in Afghanistan.

House Speaker Mike Johnson says he expects the House to vote on the bill on Friday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
