Yahoo acquired Vizify, a startup that has expertise in creating interactive infographics and videos for users' social media data
Yahoo's acquisition of Vizify, a startup that transforms users' social media content into graphical content, was confirmed on the startup's official website Wednesday, adding to the Internet giant's growing string of acquisitions. The Portland-based startup confirmed that all services will be shut down and refunds will be offered to its premium customers. New signups and purchases of paid plans will not be entertained by Vizify going forward, as the company focuses on bringing a more visual approach to Yahoo's extensive data.
"As part of the transition to Yahoo, we will be sunsetting the Vizify service. As for what's next, we can't talk specifics just yet, but we're excited to bring a more visual approach to data at Yahoo," Vizify wrote on its website. "We have a lot more up our sleeves and can't wait to get started."
Vizify was founded by a team of five in 2011 with an aim to make personal data into something more beautiful. The company helps users create graphical bios, infographic cards and videos. Vizify also noted that it has been in talks with Yahoo since last summer and found the right opportunity to join forces with the Internet company that shares similar goal and passion.
As for Yahoo, the company has added several startups under its ownership. Since CEO Marissa Mayer took control of the company in July of last year, the web giant has acquired 37 startups, including Vizify, to get talent and experience for new technologies and services. Companies like Incredible Labs, creator of mobile personal assistant app Donna; Tomfoolery, maker of Anchor app used for sharing files, groups chats, emails and voice calling for business; Cloud Party, virtual world gaming service; Wander, creator of Days app; and Distill, technical recruiting startup, are some of Yahoo's acquired services in recent months.
To carry out the transition smoothly, Vizify has planned steps in place. Current plan holders will receive full refund for all services associated with Vizify. Premium customers will be able to take control of their personal domain, free of charge. To do so, Vizify will send instructions to their registered email address. Also, Vizify will offer all bio-holders a way to archive a snapshot of the most recent bio that will remain accessible in the same Web address until Sept. 4, 2014, the startup explained.
