A New York mother who has been staying in a psych ward since her young twin children were found dead is now being accused of smothering them.

A grand jury indicted Gloria Asamoah, 42, on multiple felony charges, according to WABC-TV, connected to the deaths of her children, 5-year-old twins Gianna and George Kantanka.

The NYPD found the children in the family's apartment in December.

The mother told police the children had been throwing up and they had been sick at school, but an autopsy later found they had been choked to death.

Asamoah is being held in a mental institution. She won't be arraigned until after she is released.

"At this time we have an arrest warrant for mom," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said in a Tuesday news conference. "She's back in a psych ward. She's not free to leave at any given time."

Kenny said there were no prior incidents on file involving the children, who both reportedly had autism, and they appeared to be well taken care of in the investigation.

"There was food in the fridge, plenty of clothing for the kids, school interviews resulted in teachers saying the mom was very involved with the kids, had taken an active role in their lives," Kenny said.

It was not clear what happened before the deaths.

Their father was at work at the time of the deaths and was not expected to be charged, WPIX-TV reported.
