Comedian Colin Jost repeatedly roasted President Joe Biden during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday before praising him as a "decent man" who had earned the vote of Jost's late grandfather.
The "Saturday Night Live" cast member and writer said his beloved grandfather, William Kelly, was a firefighter on New York City's Staten Island for 40 years before dying last year at the age of 95.
"I don't know if you know realize, Mr. President, but Staten Island firefighters are not normally your demographic," Jost quipped during the black-tie event at the Washington Hilton hotel.
But Jost told Biden that Kelly "voted for you in the last election that he ever voted in."
He "voted for you. And the reason that he voted for you is because you're a decent man," Jost said.
The tribute came after Jost peppered Biden, 81, with a series of hilarious digs about his age, poor poll numbers and sinking popularity among Black voters ahead of his November re-election bid against former President Donald Trump.
"My 'Weekend Update' co-anchor, Michael Che, was going to join me here tonight, but in solidarity with President Biden, I decided to lose all my Black support," he joked.
Jost then invoked a recurring "Weekend Update" bit, saying, "Che told me to say that, and I'm just realizing I was set up."
Jost also took some comic shots at Trump, including a joke about the presumptive Republican nominee's ongoing "hush money" trial in New York City.
"I'll be honest with you, I don't have a lot of time. I need to get back to New York because I'm juror No. 5 on a big trial," said the clean-cut, preppy-looking comedian.
"Trump's lawyer took one look at me and he's like, 'He's got to be on our side.'"
