Rapper and music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs apologized Sunday for his appalling assault of former girlfriend Cassie Ventura that was captured on video.
"It was inexcusable," Combs said in a dramatic message posted on Instagram, adding that he takes "full responsibility" for his actions in the 2016 confrontation in a Los Angeles hotel hallway.
Combs said he was at a low point in his life then: "I was f---ed up. I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable."
It's "so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that," he added.
"I was disgusted then when I did it. I'm disgusted now," he added in the video post. "I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I'm so sorry. But I'm committed to be a better man each and every day. I'm not asking for forgiveness. I'm truly sorry."
CNN first aired the CCTV video on Friday that showed Combs - wearing only a towel - punching, shoving, kicking and dragging Ventura in a hotel hallway
The video emerged after a recent series of allegations of physical and sexual violence against Combs.
Los Angeles District Attorney George Gacon's office issued a statement after the release of the video calling it "extremely disturbing."
"We are aware of the video that has been circulating online allegedly depicting Sean Combs assaulting a young woman in Los Angeles. We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch," the statement added.
The statement noted, however, that "unfortunately" the attack occurred too long ago for any criminal charges to be filed. It added that no one had come forward to file a complaint regarding the incident.
The taped attack resembles a description of an incident at an InterContinental Hotel in the Century City area of Los Angele that was described in a lawsuit filed by Ventura against Combs alleging years of sexual abuse and other violence.
Ventura reached an undisclosed settlement with Combs last November.
Douglas Wigdor, Ventura's attorney, told CNN that the "gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light."
There was no immediate response from Ventura to Combs' apology.
