Baltimore's former top prosecutor is asking President Biden to pardon her days away from sentencing for a conviction in connection to the purchase of two Florida vacation homes.
The former Baltimore City State's attorney Marilyn Mosby was found guilty by two juries.
She lied about a COVID-19 financial hardship and then lied on load documents to secure a better loan rate.
Mosby, 44, claimed the financial hardship during the coronavirus pandemic to get money from the city's retirement fund.
She claimed she didn't intentionally lie on mortgage applications but inadvertently failed to disclose some debts on them.
She has claimed the charges were politically and racially motivated, CBS News reported.
Her attorneys are asking for an alternative to prison time, like probation.
Mosby has also been asking the president to pardon her during appearances on radio and TV shows.
"I'm innocent. I'm facing 40 years for withdrawing funds from my retirement savings," Mosby said on the nationally syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club. "The United States government, a global superpower, is coming for me."
The NAACP and other civil rights organizations have also called on Biden to pardon her.
The CEO of the NAACP wrote a letter stating, "The only thing Marilyn Mosby is guilty of is the desire to provide her family with a better life."
The Congressional Black Caucus is also calling for the pardon.
"As a nation that leads by example, our justice system must not be weaponized to prevent progress toward a more perfect union," wrote U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), the chairman of the caucus.
She faces up to 40 years in federal prison but prosecutors are seeking 20 months for Mosby.
Mosby served two terms as state's attorney for Baltimore. She lost a reelection bid after being indicted.
