A mayoral candidate was gunned down at a rally on Wednesday, marking nearly two dozen assassinations during this violent campaign season in Mexico.

Alfredo Cabrera was gunned down in the southern state of Guerrero causing panic and chaos among his supporters at the rally, CBS News reported.

The gunman walked up behind him and shot him in the head.

Cabrera's shocking murder was caught on camera. He was among his fans and smiling in the moments before he was gunned down.

How Many Candidates Have Been Murdered in Mexico?

Official tallies put the number of dead at 23 but the number could be as high as 34 since September.

Six candidates have been killed in just the state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located.

The violence has caused some candidates to drop out of running and others choosing to not get involved in the first place.

Is There Cartel Violence in Mexico?

The killings are mostly linked to drug cartels seeking to influence local elections.

In Tumbiscatio, Michoacan cartels have even used drones armed with explosives in their attacks, NBC News reports.

The Mexican government has provided armed guards to around 500 candidates who say their lives are at risk.

Mexicans go to the polls on Sunday, June 2.

More than 20,700 offices at the federal and local level are up for grabs, Aljazeera reports. The offices include the presidency, 500 seats in the country's House of Representatives and 128 in its Senate.

Opposition presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez is running against former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

They are running to succeed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The winner will be Mexico's first female president.
