Nearly half of Independent voters think Donald Trump should drop out of the presidential race, according to a new poll since his historic New York conviction on 34 felonies.

The Morningside Consults poll found that 49% of Independents believe he should quit the race. A much smaller, but still sizeable, number of Republican voters (15%) also think he should drop out of the race. Among Trump supporters, that number drops to 8%.

The poll found that more than half of voters (54%) approve of the guilty verdict against the former president.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll taken in the hours after Trump's conviction last Thursday found that a significant 10% of Republicans were "less likely" to vote for Trump as a convicted felon.

Around half of voters in the Morning Consult poll said they would oppose the former president's imprisonment. The most popular option (69%) would be fining Trump, followed by another 49% who would place him on probation.

The judge scheduled Trump's sentencing for 11 July, just days before the Republican National Convention.

The survey found that 52% of voters believe Trump committed crimes related to his affair with former porn star Stormy Daniels, up from 46% at the time of his indictment last year.

The growth was driven by Democratic voters (from 77% to 88%), while most Republicans feel the case was politically motivated (from 76% to 77%).

Around 4 in 5 Trump voters (and about 7 in 10 Republicans) believe other Republican politicians should publicly campaign with Trump and raise money for his presidential campaign.

On Thursday, a jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to cover up a $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels to hide their relationship from voters in a bid to affect the 2016 presidential election. Trump says he will appeal the verdict.
