Dozens of Democratic and Republican lawmakers traveled to France, Thursday, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied forces storming the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion.

Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York announced that a bipartisan delegation would participate in the anniversary observances, along with foreign dignitaries, veterans and active duty members of the military.

"Eighty years ago, these brave servicemembers went directly into conflict because they knew that the future of civilization was at stake," Jeffries said in a press release. "We remember the remarkable courage under fire of our veterans and know that America is free only because of their extraordinary bravery."

Nearly 200 surviving veterans of the massive military operation were present in France, along with Presidents Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron of France and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine. The British King Charles III and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were also in attendance, as was German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

"The men who fought here became heroes not because they were the strongest, the toughest or the fiercest - although they were," Biden said, "but because they were given an audacious mission, knowing - every one of them knew - the probability of dying was real."
