Greek police believe they have discovered the remains of missing British celebrity doctor Michael Mosely days after he disappeared during a walk on an island beach.
Passengers on a private boat spotted the body Sunday morning, a police spokesperson told the Associated Press. Officials are still awaiting a formal identification to confirm that the remains Mosley.
Mosley, 67, is known in the United Kingdom for his frequent appearances on BBC popular television shows including "Trust Me, I'm A Doctor."
He was last seen hiking on the island of Symi around 1:30 p.m. last Wednesday. He never returned from the walk, and his wife reported him missing some six hours later.
Symi Mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas told the AP that he was on a boat Sunday morning when passengers spotted Mosley's remains on the Agia Marina beach. The body was littered with rocks and lying face up against a fence and at the bottom of a steep slope.
"We zoomed with the cameras and saw it was him," Papakalodoukas told the wire service.
Mosley's disappearance had prompted a major search and rescue operation. Officials from other Greek islands, drones, helicopters and trained dogs were deployed in Symi to aid search efforts.
"We've got every service possible out there looking for him," a police chief told the Guardian after his disappearance. "He was officially reported missing this morning and now there are police, firemen and volunteers involved in the search."
