A fundraiser for the family of a "bubbly" six-year-old girl who died in a freak badminton accident has raised more than $120,000, as her family prepares for her funeral.
Lucy Morgan was watching her siblings play badminton at a lakefront cottage in Maine on June 1 when her 10-year-old brother's racquet broke during a downward swing, dislodging the aluminum shaft from the wooden handle, according to reports.
The shaft flew through the air and pierced Lucy's skull. She was breathing but unresponsive when paramedics rushed her to a local hospital.
In the initial aftermath of Lucy's accident, a friend created a GoFundMe to assist the family during the girl's hospital stay.
"Tragedies like this take a toll on all aspects of life - emotional, physical, mental and financial," the GoFundMe read.
The fundraiser has received nearly 1,500 individual donations.
"This page serves as a place to provide them extravagant financial support - to help pay for meals while they are away from home, lodging for family medical costs ... whatever they need."
Her pastor father, Jesse Morgan, shared in a blog post on his New Creation Living website that she went into cardiac arrest during the operation and was left with "no brain function" and given a "very slim chance" of recovering. Lucy died early Wednesday after four days on life support.
Morgan remembered his daughter as "very bubbly and also reserved at times," when speaking with Fox News.
"Once you got to know her, she was very, very outspoken and a lot of fun. She was a tough kid and played soccer really hard."
Lucy's funeral will be live-streamed on Saturday, June 15 at www.greenpondbible.org.
