The Princess of Wales gaily joined the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace Saturday for the King's official birthday in her first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis.

Kate Middleton, husband William, and their children, George, 10, Charlotte, 9, and 6-year-old Louis gathered on the balcony with King Charles and Queen Camilla to watch a Royal Air Force formation fly overhead. Kate, wearing one of her customary eye-catching hats, smiled and waved enthusiastically to the exuberantly cheering crowd.

A short time earlier the Princess of Wales and her children arrived in a state carriage from the palace to view the Horse Guards Parade, which is known as Trooping the Color. William was part of the parade on horseback.

King Charles, who has had his own battle with cancer, and Queen Camilla were also taken by carriage from Buckingham Palace to mingle with the Horse Guards and fans.

It was Kate's first public appearance since Christmas Day, just months before she revealed her cancer diagnosis.

Neither the Princess of Wales nor Charles have revealed details about their cancer.

Kate and William quickly post a video on social media, thanking crowds for their warm welcome to the event.

Kate said in an Instagram post Friday that she knows she's "not out of the woods yet" regarding her illness, but is "making good progress."

'As anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days," Middleton, 42, noted.

"On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well," she added.

Middleton said she still has several more months of treatment ahead of her, and is looking forward to spending the summer with her children — and at some public engagements
