A huge heat dome is expected to start baking much of the U.S. on Sunday and shatter records with temperatures up to 25 degrees above normal as the week wears on and summer officially starts Thursday.
Warming ocean water could also fuel the first tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, CNN warned Saturday.
The heat dome, in which hot air is trapped by high atmospheric pressure, is forecast to start building Sunday over the East Coast and expand west across the Midwest and Great Lakes regions.
Temperatures in New York City are likely to reach the mid to high 90s on Tuesday through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
The nighttime won't bring much relief either, with low temperatures not falling below the low 70s.
High humidity will also make it feel even warmer, with the heat index expected to reach triple digits as far north as Maine.
Meanwhile, the season's first tropical storm of the year could develop in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, CNN said.
