A missing Dutch tourist was found dead early Saturday on the eastern island of Samos in the latest of several incidents involving tourists in the Greek islands, including deaths or disappearances as a heatwave continues in the region.
The remains of the 74-year-old Dutch tourist were discovered by a Fire Service drone, according to the Independent. He was lying face down in a ravine approximately 300 yards from where he was last seen on Sunday, struggling to walk in the intense heat.
Dr. Mosely, a well-known British TV anchor and author, was also found dead last Saturday on the island of Symi following a hike through rocky terrain.
On Thursday, a 70-year-old American tourist was reported missing by his host, a Greek-American friend, on the small island of Mathraki in Greece's northwest extremity, according to the Associated Press.
Another missing U.S. tourist was identified as as 59-year-old retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California, ABC News reported. He reportedly went on a hike by himself in very hot conditions.
Sikinos, a remote island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea with fewer than 400 permanent residents, reported two French tourists missing on Friday.
Greece media was talking about the importance of alerting tourists about the risks of hiking in extreme heat. Temeratures reached 113 degrees last week.
