Federal authorities arrested a Michigan man accused of trafficking 15 kilos of suspected cocaine in his checked bags through the Detroit airport.
Investigators grew suspicious when Woodrow Campbell booked a last-minute, one-way flight from Los Angeles to Saginaw, Michigan, connecting in Detroit, less than 24 hours before his June 7 departure, WDIV-TV, The Detroit News, and the Morning Sun reported, citing the criminal complaint.
Last-minute flight booking is a tactic commonly used by drug traffickers and Campbell was previously accused of abandoning a checked bag with nearly 5 kilos of cocaine at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport in May 2023, authorities said, the outlets reported.
The Wayne County Airport Authority's Airport Special Investigations Unit intercepted Campbell's three bags in Detroit during his layover earlier this month and a drug K9 allegedly indicated the presence of narcotics.
A judge issued a search warrant and investigators allegedly found five bricks of cocaine wrapped in oversized men's clothing, according to the complaint.
Campbell was arrested at the gate of his Saginaw-bound flight.
He pleaded not guilty to drug possession with intent to distribute.
