A decades old mystery has been solved.

Authorities discovered skeletal remains in a wooded area in Orlando in January 1993 but were unable to positively identify who they belonged to - until now.

The human remains have been determined to be those of Greg Carpenter, 48, a Florida man who vanished a day after Christmas 30 years ago.

Deputies revealed that the remains discovered near Heather Road and Dennis Avenue were able to be positively identified using newer technology previous investigating teams didn't have.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office stated that "the victim was determined to be a white male, and the manner of death was ruled homicide due to a gunshot wound to the head," adding that "despite extensive efforts, the identity of the victim remained unknown for nearly three decades."

Carpenter had last been seen alive on December 26, 1992, and was reported missing the same day-almost three weeks before his body was unearthed, according to WKMG-TV.

As the case remains unsolved, detectives are turning to the public for help.

Anyone who knew Greg Carpenter or who has information about the circumstances surrounding his death is urged to contact the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
