The grieving mother of a Georgia firefighter found dead in a car with his ex one week after vanishing with her claims her son was a "victim" as the mystery surrounding the former couple's deaths deepens.
The bodies of Chandler Kuhbander and his ex-girlfriend, Raegan Anderson, both 24 and of Hinesville, Georgia, were discovered inside Anderson's vehicle 400 miles away in Cocke County, Tennessee, Sunday, police confirmed.
The Liberty County firefighters disappeared from the parking lot of a local gym where he was last seen on surveillance video getting into Anderson's car June 24.
Kuhbander's mom, who reported her son missing, confirmed the pair were high school sweethearts and spent seven years in a rocky relationship before ending things.
"My son was amazing," Jane Kuhbander said in a statement to HNGN this week. "He worked hard and loved even harder. He never wanted to see anyone sad or suffering."
"I want people to take away that men are victims, too," she said, without elaborating. "Be a voice for the voiceless! He wouldn't want this tragedy to be for nothing. Hold your loved ones tighter and never leave angry or without an 'I love you.'"
In a Facebook post last week pleading for her son's safe return, Jane wrote that while Anderson "is not a bad person," she is "lost, unstable and losing what she has known" following the tumultuous breakup.
"They were/are not good for each other," added Jane. "She is making bad decisions because of this. They are not a couple but he cares deeply for her. We don't want anything bad to happen to either one of them, we want them home safe and sound."
"We do not know if she has any firearms on her but we know she owns one and that it is a possibility she has it on her. They have been a dangerous topic for her mental state. Chandler is a great man who works hard and loves deeply. I BELIEVE he is doing what he feels is right to keep them both in the world."
Jane previously announced that her son was missing with Anderson and he did not "willingly" disappear.
Two days before they vanished, Anderson confronted Kuhbander while he was on a date with another woman at the Olive Garden. The confrontation spilled into the parking lot, where police said she keyed his car.
Officers responded and arrested Anderson on charges of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct, according to the incident report, WJCL-TV reported.
"He was telling me she was blowing up his phone, and he said that she had threatened that she was going to commit suicide," Jane told the outlet last week. "And, it's not the first time that she's done it."
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told HNGN the investigation into the deaths of Kuhbander and Anderson remains active and ongoing.
