Hurricane Beryl battered through Jamaica, tangled fishing boats in Barbados and wrecked roughly 95% of homes on a pair of islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines before taking aim at the Cayman Islands.

At least seven people are dead from the storm.

Once a Category 5 hurricane, Beryl has dropped to a Category 3 storm onThursday with 120 mile per hour sustained winds but it remains a major hurricane.

The storm was 50 miles southwest of Grand Cayman Island and 385 miles east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico at 8 a.m.

It was moving west-northwest at 20 mph. Beryl was expected to weaken but hit south of Tulum early Friday as a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said Jamaica had not seen the "worst of what could possibly happen."

"We can do as much as we can do, as humanly possible, and we leave the rest in the hands of God," Holness told the Associated Press.

Among the known deaths are three people in Grenada and Carriacou, one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and three in Venezuela. Four people are also missing in Venezuela.

Hurricane warnings remain in effect as Beryl continues to barrel through the weekend.
