Britain's center-left Labour Party swept into power in landslide elections in the UK Thursday after 14 years of conservative Tory rule.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak resigned shortly after results were declared, and apologized for one of the worst Tory performances in years.

"To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry," he said in remarks outside of 10 Downing Street. "I take responsibility for this loss."

Sunak has already handed over power to Labour head Keir Starmer, whom he called a "decent, public-spirited man." Starmer was officially appointed the new prime minister by King Charles Thursday after the two met at Buckingham Palace.

Starmer earlier told colleagues: "We did it. You campaigned for it, you fought for it, and now it has arrived ... change begins now."

It was an impressive victory for Labour in a Europe that appears to be increasingly slipping to the right.

Labor grabbed one of the biggest majorities in British history. The party won 412 seats, a commanding majority of some 170, possibly more as the last few results have yet to be reported, the Guardian reported.

Conservatives won just 121 seats so far, a plunge from 365 five years ago.

Donald Trump reached out to congratulate a single winner in the relections — right-winger Brexit supporter and Reform Party candidate Nigal Farage, who finally captured a seat following seven previous tries.
