Deputy U.S. Marshals shot a suspected carjacker Friday while reportedly guarding Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's Washington, D.C., residence.

The Metropolitan Police Department said its Force Investigations Team, which investigates all law enforcement officer-involved shootings in the District, is investigating the shooting.

According to police, two deputy U.S. Marshals were parked in separate vehicles on the 2100 block of 11th Street Northwest at around 1:15 a.m. on July 5 when the suspect exited a vehicle and approached one of the Marshals.

The suspect, later identified as 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers, allegedly pointed a handgun at the Marshal in an attempt to carjack him. The Marshal fired several shots at the suspect with his service weapon, and the second Marshal also fired his service weapon.

Flowers was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and no one else was injured in the incident. Police shared a photo of the firearm recovered at the scene.

The Marshals Service told the New York Post that the deputies were parked outside Sotomayor's home when the shooting took place.

Flowers was arrested and charged with armed carjacking, carrying a pistol without a license, and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device.
