Joe Biden's support from within his own party continues to dwindle as the president prepares to convince the American people in a high-takes press conference that he can handle another four years in office.

The president's last press conference was in November 2023, and he rarely participates in formal solo press conferences, according to NPR.

Following his unconvincing performance during the first debate against former President Donald Trump, eight House Democrats publicly called on Biden to step aside.

Senators meanhile, have been more hesitant to voice their concerns, but in an op-ed in the Washington Post on Wednesday, Senate Democrat Peter Welch (D-Vt.) became the first to call on the president to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

"We cannot unsee President Biden's disastrous debate performance," Welch wrote, before adding, "For the good of the country, I'm calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race."

Democratic US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also privately signaled to donors that he's open to a Democratic presidential candidate other than President Joe Biden, according to Axios.

Biden continues to maintain he is mentally and physically capable of seeing the election through, insisting in a letter he wrote to congressional Democrats on Monday that it's time to "end" the pressure on him to drop out, reported Axios.

Biden will speak to the American people after talking to NATO leaders at 5:30 p.m. You can watch it here.
