Former President Donald Trump vowed to remain steadfast and confront "wickedness" without fear in a new message Sunday about the attempt on his life by a would-be assassin.

"In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined and not allowing evil to win," he wrote.

In her first message on the attack, former first lady Melania Trump called the attack against her husband a "heinous act," and decried a "tattered America."

When "I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life and [son] Barron's life were on the brink of devastating change," she wrote.

"Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love," she added.

Trump was injured in part of his right ear by a bullet at the start of his speech at rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday. A spectator was killed in the attack, and two were critically injured.

Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Pennsulvania, was fatally shot on the scene by Secret Service agents. His motive has not yet been revealed by officials.
