As many as 10 tornadoes ripped through the Chicago area Monday night, leaving at least one person dead amidst a flurry of storms.

About 45 miles outside of Chicago in Cedar Lakes, Indiana, 44-year-old Laura Nagel died after a tree fell on her home during a severe weather outbreak in the Midwest, the coroner's office confirmed, according to CBS News.

"Pretty much every single county had a tornado warning," Meteorologist Alicia Roman said of the "rare" weather event in The Windy City, according to WMAQ-TV.

EF-1 tornadoes, with gusts up to 110 mph, were confirmed near Chicago's west side; Bristol, Illinois; and Oswego, Illinois, according to the National Weather Service. At least one tornado of similar severity was confirmed in Channahon, Illinois.

Three EF-0 tornadoes, with winds up to 85 mph, were also confirmed in the area.

The NWS will continue its survey of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana to evaluate for damage this week.

"So far, we have 29 different paths of potential damage that we will be investigating today and in the coming days to identify potential tornado tracks," the NWS said on X.

By Tuesday morning, over 140,000 residents were without power due to downed trees, flooding and storm damage, according to the ComEd electric company.
