A New Jersey man who was on the run allegedly helped a killer dismember one of his victims and stuff the body parts into multiple trash bags before authorities caught up to him, alleged prosecutors.
Jared Krysiak, 34, of Brick Township, has been charged with hindering apprehension and desecration of human remains in connection with the murder of 56-year-old Kerry Rollason, according to prosecutors.
Rollason's butchered body was discovered Friday at a residence in Jackson Township, while detectives were investigating the murder of another victim – 25-year old Gabriella Caroleo.
Authorities allege Caroleo was murdered by Maxwell Johnston, 35, on June 27.
On July 5, U.S. Marshals located Johnston at a home in Toms River, where he was hiding out with Krysiak, Danielle Bolstad, 42; Elizabeth Mascarelli, 29; and Jarred Palumbo, 36, according to prosecutors.
Krysiak, Bolstad, and Palumbo exited the home without incident, while Johnston and Mascarelli stayed inside.
Mascarelli subsequently surrendered following a six-hour standoff. Marshals deployed a drone and located Johnston in a bedroom, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, said prosecutors.
Further investigation of the residence and into the death of Caroleo indicated that another murder may have been committed earlier this month, leading detectives to the Jackson Township property where Rollason's remains were found.
A medical examiner determined Rollason died from multiple gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma perpetrated by Johnston, who then sought help from Krysiak, Mascarelli, Bolstad and Palumbo in the dismemberment and disposal of his remains.
"The crimes committed against Mr. Rollason are unsettling and disturbing. I am thankful for the law enforcement professionals that worked diligently to uncover these depraved and soulless crimes," Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a statement.
Like Krysiak; Mascarelli, Bolstad and Palumbo have also been charged with the dismemberment and concealment of Rollason's remains.
Mascarelli also faces several weapons charges.
Motives in the slayings of Caroleo and Rollason have not been disclosed.
