"Game Of Thrones" fans will have three more seasons to look forward to as production has confirmed the show hit its "midpoint," according Entertainment Weekly.
Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss explained to EW there is an end in sight for the series, and lucky number seven might be the show's cutoff point.
"It feels like this is the midpoint for us," Benioff said. "If we're going to go seven seasons, which is the plan, season 4 is right down the middle, the pivot point."
"I would say it's the goal we've had from the beginning," he added. "It was our unstated goal, because to start on a show and say your goal is seven seasons is the height of lunacy. Once we got to the point where we felt like we're going to be able to tell this tale to its conclusion, that became [an even clearer] goal. Seven gods, seven kingdoms, seven seasons. It feels right to us."
"Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin also wants to complete the 6th and 7th novel in his series before the ending of the HBO show is brought up in production. During an interview with Vanity Fair, Martin admitted he had to give up the ending to his series in order for production to build up to the finale.
"I can give them the broad strokes of what I intend to write, but the details aren't there yet. I'm hopeful that I can not let them catch up with me," Martin told Vanity Fair.
The HBO production team told EW they are mindful of the conversations they have had with Martin, and don't want to push the story farther than it needs to go.
"We're all very mindful that they're having conversations all the time with [author George R.R. Martin]," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told EW. "I think they do feel bullish enough that there's enough story to deliver through season 7. I hate to sound greedy, but our longest shows have gone 7 or 8 seasons, so seven is a nice long run for us."
"Game of Thrones" will return for its fourth season on April 6.
