George R.R. Martin Releases Excerpt From 'The Winds of Winter,' The Sixth Installment In the 'Game of Thrones' Novels

George R.R. Martin has released a chapter of his upcoming sixth installment in the "Game of Thrones" novels on his official website.

Martin released the new excerpt from The Winds of Winter on his official website. The chapter titled "Mercy" begins as followed:

She woke with a gasp, not knowing who she was, or where.

Half-light filled the room, grey and gloomy. Shivering, she sat up in bed and ran a hand across her scalp. Stubble bristled against her palm. I need to shave before Izembaro sees. Mercy, I'm Mercy, and tonight I'll be raped and murdered. Her true name was Mercedene, but Mercy was all anyone ever called her...

Martin recently spoke to Vanity Fair about how the HBO "Game of Thrones" series is quickly catching up to him, which is "alarming" considering he hasn't finished the novels. However, the writer has a plan to keep HBO from catching up to him, and it will most likely involve writing more books.

"Hopefully, I will be able to finish it at seven books," Martin told Vanity Fair. "It's big, you know? And the truth is, it's not a trilogy. It's one long novel. A really, really long novel. It's one story. And when it's all done, they'll put it out in a box set, and if anyone is still reading it twenty years from now, or a hundred years from now, they'll read it all together. They'll read it from beginning to end, and they'll lose track, as I do, of what occurred in what book."
