Katherine Webb is officially off the market. The former Miss Alabama USA announced the exciting news on Twitter sharing a photo of her hugging her boyfriend AJ McCarron. On her ring finger was a sparkly diamond ring.
"WE'RE ENGAGED!!! @10AJMcCarron," she tweeted.
Webb then posted a close-up of the ring revealing that the former University of Alabama quarterback designed the ring himself. According to the New York Daily News, McCarron popped the question at Coast Restaurant at The Beach Club in Gulf Shores.
Webb hasn't dished on the engagement details but witnesses at the restaurant congratulated the happy couple. Webb and McCarron have been dating since 2012. The brunette beauty was thrust into instant stardom last year after ESPN announcer Brent Musburger gushed about her beauty during the 2013 BCS National Championship after he spotted her in the crowd.
"You quarterbacks get all the good-looking women," he joked during the broadcast to his booth partner Kirk Herbstreit, who is a former quarterback.
According to TMZ, immediately following the comment Webb gained 100,000 Twitter followers and was bombarded with media requests. There were reports that her newfound fame had put a strain on her relationship with McCarron.
Sources told TMZ that the football player wasn't happy that she was overshadowing his skills on the football field. Webb then canceled several interviews that had already been scheduled, adding to the speculation that McCarron was jealous and forced her to back out.
Eventually the former beauty queen released a statement saying that McCarron did not affect her decision to cancel the interviews. According to TMZ, the statement said she pulled out of the scheduled appearances because she didn't want her relationship to be viewed as a "celebrity status" thing.
"I want it to be about me and him," the statement read. "He's a guy I can see myself having a real future with."
Musburger eventually apologized in a statement admitting that his comments about Webb were a little inappropriate.
McCarron's mother told TMZ that both families are excited about the engagement and are already in "wedding planning" mode.
