"Harry Potter" film mania will continue with the spinoff "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."
According to The New York Times, J.K. Rowling spinoffs for the wizarding world will be a trilogy, which Warner Bros. will turn into three films. Rowling already adapted her work into a screenplay for the first installment of the "Fantastic Beasts" trilogy.
"Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the 'Harry Potter' series, but an extension of the wizarding world," Rowling revealed when news of the spinoff triology first surfaced, according to the NY Times. "The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the 'Harry Potter' books or seen the films, but Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway."
The "Fantastic Beasts" trilogy is a prequel to the "Harry Potter" series following the story of Newt Scamander, a magizoologist who sets off on adventures studying "wizarding world's fantastic flora and fauna," according to the NY Times. Rowling credits Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara for making the film project happen.
"When I say he made 'Fantastic Beasts' happen, it isn't P.R.-speak but the literal truth," Rowling told the NY Times. "We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call, and then I got out the rough draft that I'd thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!"
There is no set release date, cast news or any confirmation the original "Harry Potter" actor will reprise their roles.
