Channing Tatum has confirmed he is in talks to play Gambit in the upcoming "X-Men" film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tatum has not signed a deal to officially take on the role, but can say he's very close to playing the superhero.
"I hope to be joining -- everything's not done yet," Tatum told THR. "I've obviously been in talks, and we're on the one yard line...I'm always afraid of being like, 'Yes it's totally happening' and then it doesn't happen."
"I'm dying to do it," he added.
Tatum's casting negotiations were recently confirmed by "X-Men: Days of Future Past" producer Lauren Shuler Donne during an interview to Total Film. Donne also revealed why she believes Tatum is right for the role.
"He's a rogue, Channing," Donne explained to Total Film. "He's a rascal just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action we all know that. He's got a really good heart...I think he'll be great for Gambit."
Tatum first expressed interest in taking on the role of Gambit back in 2013 during a press conference promoting his film "White House Down."
"I would like to play Gambit. Gambit's my favourite. I'm from New Orleans, around that area. My dad's from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real," Tatum explained.
"No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, 'cause I actually like his Gambit, but I've always lived around Cajun people," the actor added. "Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He's a thief. He kind of rode the line."
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" will be released to theaters on May 23.
