'Beauty and the Beast' Gets The 'Maleficent' Treatment As Disney's Latest Film Set For A Live-Action Remake

Disney has announced their classic tale of "Beauty and the Beast" is getting a live-action reboot.

Variety reports "Twilight" director Billy Condon will be taking on the project while writer Evan Spiliotopoulos will pen the script. Disney has yet to announce any casting news relating to the "Beauty and the Beast" film.

However, Disney will be following in the footsteps of "Maleficent" when it comes to the film's storyline. According to HitFix, sources say the film won't be a direct remake of 1991 Disney film.

"In his pitch to the studio, the director said he would also include most, if not all, of the Menken/Rice songs from the Broadway musical that ran for 13 years from 1994 to 2007," HitFix repots. 'It will be a "straight-forward, live action, large-budget movie musical,' we're told."

"Maleficent" is a modern retelling of Disney's classic tale, "Sleeping Beauty", which grossed $70 million domestically at the box office. For those unfamiliar with the storyline, check out the official description for Disney's live-action fairytale below.

"'Maleficent' explores the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic "Sleeping Beauty" and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever."
