'Gotham' TV Show Casts 'Dexter' Actor David Zayas As Dangerous Mob Boss Salvatore Maroni

FOX’S “Gotham” is throwing another Mob Boss into the Batman prequel’s mix of villains.

Former “Dexter” actor David Zayas will be playing Salvatore Maroni, a dangerous player amongst gangsters, according to Deadline. Maroni is responsible for running the city’s drug trade and unions.

“He is second only to Carmine Falcone in power and reach, and second to none in his appetite for violence,” Deadline reports. “In time, Maroni will develop into one of Batman’s first enemies and become infamous as the man responsible for disfiguring DA Harvey Dent, leading to his transformation into Two-Face.”

“Gotham” premiered the show pilot at San Diego Comic-Con 2014. Robin Taylor (The Penguin) thanked attendees for the warm reception, as his character quickly became the fan favorite at the convention.

"As an actor, you just want to get the best material possible," Taylor said during his panel appearance. "When I come to set and look at what we're doing for the day, and I see what's written … I feel like I am just stepping into something amazing."

Though the “Gotham” pilot impressed some critics, movie website JoBlo didn’t particularly enjoy what they saw:

“GOTHAM feels forced in every conceivable way. Some sub-plots and elements come across as completely out of nowhere like the lesbian relationship between Barbara Gordon and Renee Montoya. While Montoya was portrayed as a lesbian in the pages of DC Comics, the relationship between her and Barbara feels like a cheap bookmark for a future episode. I will admit that I think the casting of all the characters here fits in posters and the trailer for the series, once you watch the entire episode, something just doesn't gel.”

“Gotham” will premiere on FOX on Sept. 22.
