'Guardians of the Galaxy' Director James Gunn Teases New Female Characters Are Coming To Sequel

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn teased the inclusion of more female characters in future installments, including the possible appearance of different Marvel universe characters.

Gunn spoke during a panel at Dragon Con (via Collider), where he was asked if the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise is attempting to incorporate more female superheroes, including Captain Marvel a.k.a Carol Danvers, in the sequel.

“Gunn stated that he wanted to steer clear of 'earthlings' in his side of the Marvel universe, allowing Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) to be the main focus from Earth,” according to Collider.

“While he agreed that more than likely, Carol Danvers would appear sooner rather than later in the Marvel movies, there were plenty of other women in the comic book roster of the Guardians of the Galaxy and he was more than excited to begin introducing them into future films. The plan, according to Gunn, is to introduce new female characters into the world of Guardians as soon as he could.”

Unfortunately for fans, Captain Marvel’s big-screen appearance might not be in “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” but the sequel has been on Gunn’s mind since he signed on for the original film.

During an interview with The Huffington Post, Gunn revealed how imagining a sequel helped him develop “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

"I had given thought to 'Guardians 2' before I even set pen to paper on 'Guardians 1,'" the director told HuffPost. "This for me is the hopefully the springboard for what could be not only 'Guardians 2' but a whole plethora of new Marvel characters who are in outer space and all sorts of interesting things can happen with those people and creatures. I would love to be involved with those characters down the line."
