Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be a part of the DC Cinematic Universe, but not the upcoming “Justice League” film.
Entertainment Weekly reports the “Shazam” franchise characters won’t be appearing alongside Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman in the “Justice League" movie.
Johnson confirmed on his official Twitter account he would be playing Black Adam, the villain in the Shazam movie. Toby Emmerich, New Line president and producer of the upcoming film, told EW the “Shazam” movie would be its own separate enity.
“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” Emmerich explained. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”
“Black Adam is a complex character,” Emmerich added later on in his interview with EW. “The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”
DC’s “Shazam” movie doesn’t have an official release date, but has reportedly signed on writer Darren Lemke to pen the script. However, Warner Bros. has released their DC movie launch dates through 2020:
